WashU Law 3L Elliot Mermel recently earned third place in the 2025 Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, a national competition recognizing outstanding legal scholarship by law students across the country.
Elliot was honored for his article, “The Evolution of Standing and the Need for Foundational Realism: A Historical Inquiry from Hayburn to Harvard.” His work, sponsored by Professor Russell Osgood, offers a historical examination of the development of standing doctrine and argues for a more grounded, historically informed approach to its modern application.
The Brown Award, now in its 31st year, is widely regarded as one of the premier national recognitions for excellence in legal writing, celebrating analytical rigor, clarity, and meaningful contributions to legal scholarship.
Elliot’s recognition highlights the strength of WashU Law’s academic community and the meaningful scholarly contributions our students continue to make on the national stage.
