Recently, an Afghan family of three was granted Lawful Permanent Residence (aka “green cards”). The family was evacuated from Kabul by the United States government when Afghanistan’s government fell to the Taliban. The ILC has represented the family since the fall 2022 semester, filing the initial application for asylum, applying for work permits for the family, and accompanying them to their asylum interview in St. Louis. A year later, student-attorneys assisted the family in applying for permanent residence. After suffering violence from the Taliban government and at home, the family can now live in safety in the United States and secure a better and safer future.
Another family of three received green cards after having been granted asylum to protect them from ethnic and religious persecution in their home country. The ILC has represented them since 2022, and several student teams contributed to their successful outcome. Becoming permanent residents allows them to live safely, work, and attend school in the U.S. It brings them one step closer to becoming U.S. citizens and being able to sponsor their immediate family members who remain at risk of persecution at home.
