The Washington University School of Law only reviews transfer applications for fall semester admission. Qualified transfer applicants (as determined by the admissions committee) who have completed one year at an ABA-accredited law school are admitted to the second year class on a space available basis. The School of Law will accept for transfer a maximum of 30 semester hours earned at a student’s previous institution (the number of semester hours earned by our first-year day students). A minimum of 22 credits is required for transfer. Credit is not usually granted for law school courses beyond the first year. The School of Law will accept the credit hours from other ABA-accredited law schools as described above but not the associated grades.

Credits for courses completed at another approved law school are evaluated on an individual basis for possible transfer into the School of Law by the Associate Dean of Student Services.  Only courses completed with a grade of C or better are transferable.  No course completed at another institution in which a grade of less than C was earned will be taken into account in calculating residence credit.  The School of Law makes no claim or guarantee that credit earned will transfer to another institution.

Transfer applicants must submit all of the following materials:

  • Application form (LSAC or printed). Transfer applicants must use the “transfer application.”
  • Law school transcript;
  • Letter of good standing from current law school (include class rank if available);
  • CAS report;
  • Short personal statement which should include the reasons for requesting the transfer;
  • Résumé; and
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation are strongly suggested but not initially required. If you do not submit letters of recommendation, the admissions committee reserves the right to request one at a later date.
  • Applicants may be asked to do an interview. The interview may be conducted by phone, Skype or in person at the law school.
  • You are welcome to submit an application at any time and then follow-up with additional documents as they become available.

Important Dates:

The transfer application deadline is July 15. All files are reviewed and decisions will be distributed on a rolling basis. OCI, which is available to all committed (deposited) transfers, participation deadlines are in early June. Therefore, it is beneficial to have all of your materials submitted and, if admitted, your deposit paid by early June.
All decisions will be sent via email.

Visiting Admission:

In addition to the documentation listed above for transfer applicants, visiting candidates must submit a permission letter from their current institution certifying that all credits earned at Washington University School of Law will transfer back toward their degree. In addition, visiting applicants must clearly express the reason for their intent to visit in their personal statement.
