Call for Submissions – Inaugural AI Innovation and Law Writing Contest
The inaugural AI Innovation and Law Writing Contest invites current law students at participating law schools to explore legal reforms that could support AI innovation. This contest aims to engage the next generation of legal scholars and practitioners in shaping the future of AI governance and regulation.

August 31, 2025, 5 pm CDT
Prompt
Identify an area of law in need of reform to improve the speed and scope of AI innovation. Your analysis should:
- Focus on a specific legal domain (e.g., intellectual property, privacy, cybersecurity, liability, contracts, or other relevant areas)
- Clearly articulate the current legal challenges or gaps
- Propose concrete reforms that would better support AI development and diffusion
- Consider the legal, political, and technical feasibility of your proposed reforms
Eligibility
Currently enrolled and incoming law students at participating institutions (WashU Law, Texas Law, Miami Law, Vanderbilt Law School, University of Minnesota Law School)
Submissions Requirement
- Length: 1,500–3,000 words
- Individual authorship only (no co-authored submissions)
- Format: PDF with no identifying information
- Citations: Hyperlinks

Prizes
- Finalists (7): Invitation to present their papers to a panel of esteemed judges at an AI conference in late October (details to be announced later)
- Winner and Runner-up: Possible publication in the National Law Review, invitation to join an episode of the Scaling Laws podcast, and cash prize
Selection Process
- First-round review conducted by faculty across participating institutions
- Final selection by a distinguished panel of judges including leading legal scholars and AI policy experts
