Fear of the False: Forensic Science and the Law of Crime in Colonial South Asia

Join the Criminal Law Society for a discussion of colonial South Asia’s critical role in the development of forensic science, and how the government of British India created a web of institutions for the scientific detection of crime that, in trying to counteract the presumed tendency of colonized peoples to lie, implemented a system that enabled widespread misconduct by state experts and increased the risk of wrongful convictions of South Asian defendants. This event will feature guest speaker, Professor Mitra Sharafi, author of the recently published book, “Fear of the False: Forensic Science and the Law of Crime in Colonial South Asia.”
