Please join WashU Law in congratulating 3L Skyler Dykes for winning First Prize in the 2024 Tannenwald Writing Competition, co-sponsored by the Tannenwald Foundation and the American College of Tax Counsel. Professor Conor Clarke served as Skyler’s faculty advisor for the competition.
Named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald Jr., the competition is designed to perpetuate his dedication to legal scholarship. The Writing competition is open to full- or part-time law school students, undergraduate and graduate students. Students are encouraged to submit papers primarily focused on technical or policy-oriented tax issues relating to any type of federal or state tax or U.S. federal or state taxation system.
Skyler was selected by the Foundation’s board of directors based on the depth and creativity of her legal tax analysis, thoroughness of legal research, organization and writing style, difficulty of subject matter, and consideration of policy implications.
Skyler received a bachelor’s degree in music and French from the University of Nebraska– Lincoln. After earning her degree, she worked in education at two performing arts centers and served as Interim Executive Director of Nebraskans for the Arts – a non-profit organization focused on advancing pro-arts policies and programs in Nebraska. Skyler enrolled in WashU in 2022 as a joint J.D. and M.A. in Musicology Candidate. Since enrolling at WashU, Skyler has interned at the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston and recently completed a summer internship at WilmerHale in Boston, Massachusetts. This year, Skyler served as a Research Assistant for Professor Conor Clarke as well as Articles Editor for the Washington University Law Review. Skyler’s student note entitled Taxing Cultural Endowments is set to be published in Volume 102 of the Washington University Law Review.
