Exploring International Arbitration: WashU Law Student Externs at the Shanghai International Arbitration Center
October 16, 2025

This semester, Yunshu Li, a 3L student at WashU Law, is taking part in the International Justice and Conflict Resolution Externship. She is externing at the Shanghai International Arbitration Center (SHIAC). Yunshu provides a description of her experience so far below:
[At] SHIAC, I’ve had the chance to see how an arbitral institution manages cases behind the scenes—coordinating between parties, arbitrators, and procedural requirements to keep proceedings on track. I’ve also had opportunities to participate in several conferences and panels, where I gained insight into how arbitration intersects with industries ranging from energy to technology. These experiences have not only shown me the technical aspects of arbitration but also its broader role in supporting international business and resolving disputes across borders.
The International Justice and Conflict Resolution Externship is a semester-long program that provides students with a unique opportunity to learn international law and conflict resolution theory and practice. Multiple students have interned with international tribunals and NGOs. Some examples of where students have been placed are as follows: the ICTY in The Hague, the ECCC in Phnom Penh, Earthrights in Chiang Mai, the UN Human Trafficking Office in Bangkok, the Legal Aid Bureau and Legal Resource Centre in Durban, South Africa, FIDA in Accra, Ghana, the India Supreme Court, and the Israeli Supreme Court.[1]
