Dear WashULaw community,
As many of you know, one of the most noteworthy events at WashULaw every year is the Wiley Rutledge Moot Court Competition. The competition began in 1867 and is named in honor of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Wiley B. Rutledge, who at one time was also the Dean of the law school.
Due to the pandemic, this year’s competition is being held virtually over Zoom. The final round of the competition will be held tomorrow, April 16th at 3:00 p.m. Central Time. The final round, which is open to the public at https://wustl-hipaa.zoom.us/j/95814019964, will be judged by:
- Hon. Ronald M. Gould, United States Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
- Hon. David W. Dugan, United States District Judge, United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois
- Hon. Staci M. Yandle, United States District Judge, United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois
The final two teams in this year’s competition are comprised of:
- Christopher Charnetsky and Hayden Hanson
- Kelli Galaway and Erin Riley
Per tradition, the final round of the competition is open to all WashULaw students, faculty members, and staff, as well as any interested friends, family members, etc. So please join us to support our finalists and to witness what is sure to be a worthy demonstration of sharp, effective advocacy!

PS—This year’s problem concerns a medical marijuana user who was fired for violating his employer’s drug use policy. The user sued his employer for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as a state law that prohibits firing a person on account of medical marijuana use. On appeal following the denial of a motion to dismiss, the questions before the Supreme Court are (1) whether the employer violated the ADA by enforcing its drug use policy against a medical user, and (2) whether the ADA preempts the aforementioned state law.
