On Monday, August 19, WashU Law proudly welcomed the incoming class of JD, LLM, MLS, and JSD students for Convocation. The day began with breakfast and class photos, followed by a ceremonial walk to Graham Chapel for the official Convocation Ceremony.
Dean Lindquist opened the event with a warm welcome, emphasizing this year’s themes of civility, leadership, and community. “Your classmates are now your community,” she noted. “They will help you when you need it, provide references when you’re seeking a job, assist in your study groups, and become the leaders you admire. And because you are now bonded together in community, you and we owe each other the highest level of respect, professionalism, and kindness.”
The keynote address was delivered by Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis, United States Circuit Judge for the Sixth Circuit and a proud alumna of WashU Law. Reflecting on the character of the incoming class, Judge Davis acknowledged the leadership, civility, and community spirit that many of the students have already demonstrated. “Many of you have already been acting as leaders and know how to conduct yourselves with civility. You bring with you the communities that you are a part of. This is a great opportunity—one you should not pass up—to hone all those skills.”
As the new students embark on their legal education, the words of Dean Lindquist and Judge Davis serve as guiding principles. With a strong sense of community and commitment to leadership and civility, these students are poised to make a lasting impact, both within the halls of WashU Law and beyond.
