Professors Leila Sadat and Kim Thuy Seelinger were recently nominated to serve on the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)’s Moscow Mechanism panel of experts, which has been invoked five times to address human rights abuses since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Professor Sadat is a world-renowned authority on public international law, international criminal law, and human rights, with over 170 publications to her name. She served as special adviser on crimes against humanity to the International Criminal Court prosecutor from 2012-2023 and is the current chair of the American branch of the International Law Association. She was also recently interviewed by CNN regarding the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrants against Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Bulova, and her essay on the ICC arrest warrants appeared in Just Security in English and Ukrainian.
Professor Seelinger is an expert on sexual violence in armed conflict and forced displacement. She currently serves as special adviser on sexual violence in conflict to the International Criminal Court prosecutor. Most recently, she has led studies and provided technical assistance focused on conflict-related sexual violence in Ethiopia, Ukraine and Belarus. She also chaired the launch of the Mukwege Foundation’s guidebook on state responsibility to prevent and respond to wartime sexual violence at a United Nations Human Rights Council 53rd Session side event in Geneva.
