Build your career through hands-on legal experience.

Our externships place students in law offices, government agencies, and organizations from St. Louis to Washington, D.C. to international tribunals worldwide. Under the guidance of field supervisors and WashU Law faculty, you’ll gain firsthand experience in areas like federal prosecution, business regulation, and judicial chambers while exploring your legal interests and building essential professional skills.

Legislative Experience

Congressional & Administrative Law Externship

Spend the fall or spring semester in Washington, D.C. working with attorneys in government offices and nonprofits. We help each student secure a placement in a Congressional office, administrative agency, or NGO, where you’ll gain hands-on experience with the legislative and agency process.

  • Open to JD students in first or second semester of third year, or second semester of second year
  • Semester-long placement in Washington, D.C. with supervised experience in government settings
  • Work directly with practicing attorneys in government offices and nonprofit organizations
  • Past placements include Department of Justice, Labor, Homeland Security, and Congressional committees

Federal Prosecution

Government Lawyering Externship

Work directly with federal prosecutors in either the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri or the Southern District of Illinois. Work in the Criminal Division, Civil Division, or a combination of both, gaining exposure to all facets of federal legal practice.

  • Placement in U.S. Attorney’s Office in downtown St. Louis or Fairview Heights, Illinois
  • Criminal Division experience includes victim interviews, drafting charges, discovery, and trial work
  • Civil Division work involves pleadings, depositions, document analysis, and motion practice
  • Attend court proceedings and assist with legal research and appellate work

International Practice

International Justice & Conflict Resolution Externship

Learn international law and practice, conflict resolution theory, and advocacy while working with lawyers practicing before international courts and tribunals. Gain placement with international organizations and governmental and non-governmental offices worldwide.

  • Placements include the ICC, International Court of Justice, and Special Court for Sierra Leone
  • Work with supreme courts of foreign states, UN offices, embassy positions, and NGOs
  • Gain experience in legal research, investigation, negotiation, litigation, and policymaking
  • Past externships have taken students to The Hague, Bangkok, Durban, Accra, and more

Judicial Experience

Judicial Clerkship Externship

Work as a part-time law clerk under the supervision of state or federal judges, gaining hands-on exposure to civil and criminal litigation from the judicial perspective while developing advanced legal research and writing skills.

  • Work directly with state or federal trial or appellate judges and their law clerks
  • Draft legal memoranda and orders relevant to cases under consideration by the court
  • Perform extensive legal research and observe hearings, trials, and court proceedings
  • Develop advanced skills in legal analysis and judicial decision-making processes

Business Law

New York Regulatory and Business Externship

Learn firsthand about the practice of business entities and their regulation in this semester-long externship in New York City. Available to third-year and qualified second-year students, you’ll work under the direction of attorneys in nonprofit, government, and in-house counsel offices with an emphasis on business associations and regulation.

  • Placements include FINRA, New York Attorney General’s Office, and in-house business counsel
  • Gain hands-on experience with client representation and work with regulators in various settings
  • Develop improved lawyering skills including research, writing, legal analysis, and negotiation
  • Learn workplace professionalism, time management, and receive mentorship from practicing attorneys

Flexible Placement

Semester-In-Practice Externship

Gain hands-on professional experience anywhere outside the St. Louis area through this program for second and third-year students. Spend a semester working full time for a nonprofit, government, or in-house corporate law office in the location of your choice, working directly with an attorney supervisor at their placement site.

  • Available to second and third-year students seeking experience outside St. Louis
  • Full-time semester placement with nonprofit, government, or in-house corporate law offices
  • Choose your own location and work directly with attorney field supervisors
  • Engage in interviewing, counseling, investigation, drafting, negotiation, litigation, and settlement
