WashU Law Henry Hitchcock Professor of Law Peter Joy and Professor of Law Robert Kuehn have published a new book examining the long history of interference with law school clinics representation of clients. They have also created a “Law Clinic Interference Resources” website that includes documents from over 25 instances of clinic interference, links to journal articles on the subject, and statements from the American Bar Association, the Association of American Law Schools, and the Association of American University Professors denouncing interference.
For more than fifty years, law school clinics have provided critical legal services to individuals and organizations on issues ranging from racial and gender discrimination to environmental protection, immigration, prisoner rights, and capital defense. Yet, as Professors Joy and Kuehn document, these efforts have often drawn opposition from elected officials, business groups, alumni, and even university administrators seeking to curtail clinics’ ability to represent clients.
