WashU Law’s National Moot Court teams recently added two impressive achievements to their records, with its two teams reaching the final round and quarterfinals of the William B. Spong, Jr. Moot Court Tournament, which gathers top-ranked schools and judges from across the nation to debate current constitutional law issues. The competition was held February 14-15 at William & Mary Law School and showcased elite advocacy skills from law students across the country.
2Ls Sarah Tyler, Sealy Sikes, and Mary Hogsett were recognized as finalists in the competition. In addition to the team’s second-place finish, Sarah Tyler delivered a standout performance that earned her recognition as the competition’s Best Speaker. The second team, h reached the quarterfinals of the competition, was made up of 2Ls Zachary Irovando, Matthew Palmer, and Nathan Zou.
These accomplishments are in addition to the team’s standout performance at the National Appellate Advocacy Competition, where multiple students were honored for their advocacy and brief-writing skills.
WashU Law has competed in the Spong Invitational since 2018. The team is selected each fall through a competitive audition process open to 2L and 3L students and coached by Adjunct Professors Rich Finneran and Cort VanOstran. This year’s students continue to excel on the national stage and demonstrate the law school’s commitment to training and excellence in legal argument.
