WashU Law Professor Leila Nadya Sadat, James Carr Professor of International Criminal Law, has received the Charles Siegal Distinguished Service Award from the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA).
The award recognizes Professor Sadat’s decade of service and leadership with ABILA. During that time, she has served as President-Elect, President and Chair of the Board, as well as Co-Director of Studies and Vice-President. She also chaired the International Criminal Court Committee and the Study Group on the Crimes Against Humanity Treaty.
Throughout her leadership, Professor Sadat has encouraged students and young professionals to become involved with ABILA, including through the organization’s Student Ambassadors program. Many Washington University alums serve as leaders in the Branch, and WashU students attend the organization’s signature conference, International Law Weekend, every year. Under Sadat’s leadership, ABILA has expanded its membership, professional reputation, influence and financial standing while continuing its work to advance and defend the rule of law in international relations.
“Serving as President and then Chair of the Branch has been a labor of love,” said Professor Sadat. “I joined the Branch as a young scholar and wanted to ensure that the opportunities afforded to me would be available to others in the future. As our website notes, we need international law and cooperation ‘now, more than ever.’ I am humbled and honored to receive this award from an organization and from friends and colleagues I hold so dear and look forward to continuing to serve ABILA in various capacities in the future.”
The Charles Siegal Distinguished Service Award was established by the ABILA Board of Directors in 2020 to recognize outstanding contributions to the Branch. Recipients are selected based on extraordinary service initiatives or sustained contributions to ABILA, including service to its Board, committees or International Law Weekend.
Congratulations to Professor Sadat on this honor.
