WashU Law Professor Leila Sadat, James Carr Professor of International Criminal Law, joined leading international law experts for a two-day conference at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. The two-day conference brought together practitioners, scholars and advocates to examine the evolving legal landscape surrounding immunities for international crimes.
Professor Sadat participated in a panel titled “Advancing State Practice on Immunities for International Crimes,” where panelists discussed recent developments and key debates surrounding state immunities, including the immunities afforded to heads of state.
The conference was co-hosted as part of the Global Initiative Against Impunity, an initiative funded by the European Union. The event provided an opportunity for participants from across sectors to identify strategic opportunities for litigation, advocacy and policy engagement and to build a shared vision around the issue of immunities.
Professor Sadat is the Head of the Crimes Against Humanity Initiative, a project responsible for drafting the world’s first treaty on crimes against humanity. From 2012-2023, she served as Special Adviser on Crimes Against Humanity to the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.
