WashU Law’s BLSA Hosts 32nd Annual Scholarship Banquet

The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at WashU Law recently hosted its 32nd Annual Scholarship Banquet at The Franklin of Soulard, bringing together students, faculty, alumni, and colleagues for an evening of celebration.

This year’s theme, “Enchanted: Black Brilliance in Bloom,” highlighted the unapologetic resilience and vibrancy of Black scholars. Attendees were encouraged to exemplify the theme by supplementing their traditional formal wear with pops of bright, whimsical colors.

Guests enjoyed hearing from keynote speaker Sandra M. Moore, Managing Director and Chief Impact Officer of Advantage Capital, prior to the presentation of awards.

Established in 1973, WashU Law’s BLSA has dedicated the last 51 years to fostering academic excellence, professional development, and community engagement. The annual scholarship banquet is an opportunity to create fellowship among members and celebrate a new generation of rising Black scholars. This year’s banquet honored three students with scholarships totaling $5,000: two college students and one high school student, all of whom have demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, and commitment to their communities. These scholarships reflect BLSA’s mission to directly uplift and invest in future Black leaders, ensuring a more equitable future for all.

“It is such a rewarding experience to read the personal essays from our scholarship applicants and see why they want to be law students,” said BLSA president Ashrakat Hassan. “These are gifted students who want to pour back into their community. It’s a joy for us to play a small role in making their dreams a reality.”

Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients:

Malik Taylor, Maryville University

AnnLauren Djoko, WashU

Zarina Knox, Metro Academic and Classical High School

In addition to awarding scholarships, BLSA recognized the following individuals, as voted on by the entire BLSA membership:

Chapter Member of the Year: Grace Obimdike

Faculty Member of the Year: Professor Sheldon Evans

Staff Member of the Year: Assistant Dean Angie Smith

This year’s banquet came on the heels of a significant achievement for the organization: WashU Law’s BLSA was named Midwest Region Chapter of the Year at the 2024 National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) regional conference. This prestigious honor recognizes one chapter each year for its exceptional programming, leadership, and impact. More than 50 years since its founding, the BLSA at WashU Law continues to set the standard for excellence and build its legacy as the cornerstone of support and empowerment for Black law students.
